Today is the first day of school. As usual, it’s taking our mother forever to get ready to leave. Mrs DeVries—she’s not Lady DeVries, that’s her mother-in-law, and she hates it that she has to remind us of that--is already here, and so are Alexander and Camille.
Madimi can’t wait. She’s never been to school before, and she’s been waiting for the last two years. I never did understand why Madimi couldn’t go when I did, because Madimi’s just as bright as I am and sometimes she understands things I don’t.
My mother wants us all to sit together on the train, but I have no intention of allowing Alexander to pester Madimi the whole way to the Academy, or of listening to Camille go on and on to her about Rosier. Perhaps I shall tell Camille that Rosier has fallen in love. And with whom. |
